SPEAK THE SAME THING

(Concerning Church Fellowship)

(reprinted from March/April 1991 ILC Journal)

The fact that we are not to pray with others simply because they pray is clearly set down by precept and example in the Scripture. In spite of this, because of the extremely low view of many towards sound Scriptural doctrine, prayer is often made promiscuously with those who either tacitly or openly, wittingly or unwittingly, defy or compromise the truth of the living God.

--- Much Needless Confusion

There is, therefore, much confusion in this matter. For prayer on the one hand is an intensely personal matter and every true believer engages in prayer to the Lord privately. On the other hand, however, the Bible nowhere encourages, aids or abets praying with others who call themselves Christian and yet compromise, ignore or defy sound doctrine - all just for the sake of praying. More is involved in this than the desire, need and action for and of prayer. The true doctrine from heaven based on God's Word is involved. And that is a one way street.

Whereas prayer is an act of man towards God and consequently often has much foolishness in it:

"For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not" (Ecclesiates 7:20), and again, "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought:" (Romans 8:26).

The divine doctrine is based on the infallible Word of the living God containing no foolishness and designed of the Holy Spirit to be the sole preceptor, teacher, and fount of all faith; subject to none, master over all, given by the divine majesty and mercy not for our ratification, approval, interrogation, etc., but for our salvation. Any person or group of persons deviating from this divine inerrant truth are 'eo ipso' straying from God whether they realize it or not and Christians are commanded to "avoid" such "division" makers who propose new and different things "...contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned;" (Romans 16:17).

--- Church Fellowship Applied

All of this comes under the doctrine of Church Fellowship. And it will not be ill-advised if we apply ourselves, with Christ's blessing, to a close look at this doctrine. Let each of us, writer and reader, according to the ability that God gives to distribute and receive, apply His Words "Ask" "Seek" "Knock" and trusting in His good promise we are sure to find.

The doctrine of Church Fellowship has a two-fold application. First, when it is applied to the invisible Church, the one of which we confess in the Creed: "I believe... in the holy, Christian Church, the communion of saints;" and, secondly when it is applied to the visible church.

--- Church Fellowship and the Invisible Church

The invisible Church is denominated of no one except true believers in Jesus Christ, and Him crucified; (I Corinthians 2:2) for He alone is the foundation (I Corinthians 3:11) and Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20) of His Church. By virtue of the invincible power of Christ, the Son of God and Son of man, the gates of hell, though straining mightily, are not able to prevail against it, (Matthew 16:18). And this great Church, the only true and holy Christian Church, is the pillar and ground of truth (I Timothy 3:15) among the children of men.

--- Personal Faith

Fellowship in this Church is based upon one thing alone: personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. "And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women" (Acts 5:14). Because faith alone is the essential ingredient that unites one person with another in the holy Christian Church on earth - "on earth" for in heaven there is no need of faith for there we shall see Him face to face (I Corinthians 13:12) - and faith by its very nature is not able to be seen (as we perceive things with our senses) and therefore dwells in the heart of the person who has it, "is within you" (Luke 17:21), nothing of an external nature; no group of people great or small, Lutheran or Roman Catholic, learned or unlearned; no amount of ritual elaborate or simple; no amount of spirit or zeal be it greater than that of angels and able to instruct and impress Gabriel and Michael together - nothing of this has the smallest thing to do with attaining, maintaining and retaining fellowship in the holy Christian Church on earth. To this Church, and this Church only it behooves everyone to examine himself, whether he be in the faith (II Corinthians 13:5).

--- The Church is People

It is also to be noted carefully that the term "Church", whether invisible or visible refers only to people. Christ is not a member of the Church as His believers are, for Christ is the head of the body, the Church, (Colossians 1:18). Nor are the Word and Sacraments parts of the Church. They are, as our theologians call them "marks of the Church", signs of its presence. Whereas, it is true that there can be no Church, no person or group of persons bearing that name, without the means of grace, the marks of the Church, yet they themselves are not parts of the Church.

Therefore when we refuse to commune, or permit those not in our fellowship to participate in conducting the worship service (singing solos at weddings, playing the organ, etc.) to pray, to give the right hand of fellowship to someone, it is in no way saying that the person to whom this is refused is an unbeliever - for who but God can look into the hearts? "The Lord knoweth them that are his" (II Timothy 2:19). It would be a bold attack on the omniscient God Himself were we for one second to refuse to pray with or commune one who professes himself to be a Christian BECAUSE he does not believe right. Sometimes because of our stand on Church Fellowship we are accused of playing God when we refuse to pray with others. We deny such charges completely knowing full well that our God has not endowed us with the attribute of omniscience. Elijah saw and knew of no other believer in all of Israel but himself. But that does not mean he was alone or right in his estimation. The Lord assured him: "Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him" (I Kings 19:18).

--- Church Fellowship and the Visible Church

Then why do we refuse to commune some and pray with others, since, as we say, it is a personal matter of the heart? That comes under the second heading and concerns what is called the "visible churches", that is groups of people at various localities having different names such as Lutherans, Roman Catholics, Baptists, etc.

--- Synecdoche

The Bible indeed uses the word "church" in regard to groupings which can be seen, defined and numbered in various places, i.e., local churches or congregations, Revelation, Chapters 2-3 mentions seven such visible groups of people at seven locations, together with their seven pastors. For example: "Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;" (Revelation 2:1). "Angel" in the sense of messenger or preacher, as used of John the Baptist in Malachi: "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me:" (Malachi 3:1). The visible pastor of the visible Christian congregation receives a letter from Christ through the hand of John the Apostle. Yet, even in such visible, local groups called "churches" the Bible again and again makes it clear that it is speaking by synecdoche (a grammatical device where by the whole receives the name of a part or vice-versa). For example: "Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints," (I Corinthians 1:2). Here the visible assembly of believers in Corinth is plainly meant, "The church of God which is at Corinth" yet of that whole group of people which could be seen and numbered only true believers are members of the holy Christian Church in Corinth, "...them that are sanctified... called to be saints." Thus the entire visible group of people which men could count received the name "church" by synecdoche, ie., by virtue of the part within the assembly which truly believed and was known only to God.

--- The Same

Now, our Lord would have all His Christians everywhere to be in agreement on doctrine, on what they believe, teach and confess. "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment." (I Corinthians 1:10). There was a lot of contention and strife in the Corinthian congregation and Paul set out to set matters straight and says: "For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you." (I Corinthians 1:11). Perceive here how the Apostle talks. Unless some cantankerous spirit or doubting Thomas - might arise who would say that you can never expect a group of people all to think the same way and speak the same thing but that there will always be a lot of different opinions, the apostle to the Gentiles says: You are wrong. I am an apostle of Christ and in His name, Who happens to know more than you and me, in His dear name I beseech you to "speak the same thing" for if you do not talk the same doctrine - but one of you zooms off to the left, and another to the right - you will create divisions in the church by your mouth. And if such a contentious spirit were to press on with his skepticism and rebellion saying that you cannot expect a perfect meeting of the minds and judgments the apostle adds: "That ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment."

--- No Latitude Allowed

Anyone, therefore, who claims that the "same word, mind and judgment cannot and ought not to be expected to be found and sought diligently by Christ's people, and that a little latitude of speech, thought and judgment not only ought to be expected and tolerated but even desired has no quarrel with us, only with Jesus Christ and the apostle He Himself appointed to be the teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity (I Timothy 2:7).

--- The Apostle's Doctrine

Now this same apostle speaking by inspiration of God says in a certain place, for example, that there should be no women voters in a Christian congregation. "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence" (I Timothy 2:12), and absolutely forbids the preaching office to daughters of Eve saying in another place: "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law" (I Corinthians 14:34). Obviously then the Lord beseeching on the basis of His blood shed on Calvary would have all Christians everywhere to speak, think and have the same judgment in regard to the position of women in the congregations of Christians. And the criterion, standard and norm of this SAMENESS of thought, speech and judgment does not have one iota to do with the inward opinion, faith or infidelity of the hearer. Let the inward situation of the hearer be what it may, the WORD stands. It is the WORD OF GOD in plain human language and no manner of devious tactics, long-winded "explanations" or fancy terminology can evade, blunt or turn aside the simple force and meaning of the Words. The most rabid unbeliever will have to say: Those Words are clear. And the fact that he turns purple with rage at them and desperately tries to cover his spiritual nakedness in burlap banners, first salutes and cacophonous screaming of slogans just shows more plainly than ever that he understands the Words well otherwise he would not get so upset over them. If they amounted to nothing and were of no force he would remain calm and undisturbed. You do not get excited over something you consider to be nothing whether good or bad.

All visible churches and groups of churches united into synods, conferences, etc., calling themselves Christian are besought by the Lord to have the same thoughts, speech and judgment. Therefore, they all MUST agree: such things as voting and preaching are forbidden to women. God has spoken and it behooves all Christians to come under the obedience of faith in spite of the objections of fleshly reason. Consequently churches tolerating doctrines contrary to the Word of God are endeavoring to bring into captivity every thought of God unto the obedience of men when it should be just the opposite as the Gentile's teacher says: "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" (II Corinthians 10:5).

--- The "Unit" Concept

It is increasingly evident that the "sameness" or "unit" concept in respect to church fellowship in the worship and service of God is being brushed aside by clergy and laymen in favor of an Aristotelian empiricism laced with a generous amount of subjective eclecticism. For example, the LCMS has now what it is pleased to call "degrees of fellowship." In other words you must first evaluate what part, point or kind of fellowship with the heterodox is meant. Somehow this is to determine if it is pleasing to God or not. The lay people generally see it this way: a worship service is made of different parts, sermonizing and playing the organ being two of them. It is possible here, fickle reason teaches, to insist that the sermon and preacher be orthodox, but if there is no organist from our fellowship available, the music work may be done by a hired hand who may play skillfully on an instrument of ten strings or more. Here, supposedly, is something less important than preaching and therefore one need not be so strict in doctrine. Or the bride at her Lutheran wedding may have a good friend with a fine voice, who is a Baptist, Roman Catholic, or nothing spiritually, whom she wishes to sing thereby adding melodic beauty to her wedding worship service.

Whatever the case may be, however, the "sameness" of speech, mind and judgment required for conducting a worship service of God in a God-pleasing manner, is not present. The "unit"- concept of the worship service is being ignored for esthetic consideration. Ephesians 4:3 and 13 emphatically enunciate the unity concept of the worship service or any other kind of spiritual fellowship there may be:

The word "unity" - henotase - in the Greek, meaning "UNANIMITY, AGREEMENT" (Thayer's Lexicon page 217). A unanimity, agreement, sameness, oneness of doctrine worked by God the Holy Ghost clearly is to be understood here. "UNITY OF THE SPIRIT," "UNITY OF THE FAITH, "KNOWLEDGE" "OF THE SON OF GOD." It is contrary to the unity of faith, knowledge and practice engendered, fostered and maintained by God the Holy Ghost to have those who hold other doctrines than the true doctrine leading or conducting the public worship of God in any way, shape or form.

"Doctrine and life, confession and practice are to be one." (Lenski on Ephesians 4:3)

Having those not in doctrinal fellowship with us helping to lead or conduct a worship service, is spiritual compromise pure and simple. It is to fly in the face of the intent of the prophet's question:

"Can two walk TOGETHER, except they be AGREED?" (Amos 3:3) [emphasis by r.w.s.]

The answer is a resounding No and not MAYBE. Better by far to sing hymns with a united heart and mind based on sound doctrine than to have an organist leading the singing of hymns who is of a different spirit and confession, even though he could make angels rejoice by artful arpeggios. The latter would surely offend God and the former may offend men of dainty musical taste but sound sweet in the ears of God who searcheth the hearts.

--- Not the Same? Avoid Them!

Now, what if I am a member of a congregation, or by being a member of a congregation also a member of a larger church body such as the LCMS, ELCA, etc., and that church or body of churches tolerates and practices the aforementioned errors? Are they not teaching things contrary to the doctrine laid down in the Scripture thereby causing division in the churches and offences among the people? And by being a member of such a church am I not openly confessing that error and truth have the right to coexist? Where then is the "same" mind, speech and judgment about which the Bible talks? If I do not continue in the apostles' doctrine - which is the very fount, source, nourishment and strength of the church - how then am I continuing in their "...fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers" (Acts 2:42)? If I do not continue in the apostles' doctrine having the same mind, speech and judgment as they - the very thing that establishes all aspects of church fellowship whether it be of joint prayer, communion attendance, conducting services, etc. - I am then in a compromising position before God and man. I want to have and maintain church fellowship with those who have left the apostles' fellowship by leaving or changing the apostles' doctrine. I am then trying to maintain friendly relations with error and truth at the same time. And that is an impossibility, for "He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth..." (Matthew 12:30).

No, the apostle Paul has the right answer for that itch to "agree to disagree":

They are to be avoided because they do not have the same mind, speech and judgment God's Word requires Christians to have in matters of doctrine. Such avoiding, however, has nothing to do with the inner, subjective status of the hearts or minds associated with these erring groups. How can we know that? We cannot even tell if those who have the truth truly believe it or not. That does not lie under our jurisdiction. But we can and must pass judgment on all teaching and practice for that is all up front where everyone can see and know it.

--- But How Do I Know?

Christ warns "Beware of false prophets..." (Matthew 7:15). Then He goes on to say twice: "Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16) and "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them" (Matthew 7:20). He never says anything uselessly, so when He repeats the same thing almost at once He wishes to emphasize the point He is making: for His disciples were most likely thinking: But how do I recognize and distinguish between a true and false prophet? Especially when they come garbed in sheep's clothing? Well, says He, that is easy: "by their fruits ye shall know them." He does not say : By their unbelief ye shall know them or by their hearts ye shall know them, but "by their fruits." The fruit of a carpenter is the house he builds; of the mechanic, the car he repairs; of the housewife, the home she keeps; etc. The fruit of a prophet, good or bad, true or false, is what the preacher or teacher of religion speaks or writes. Speaking and writing belong to his calling. His lips and hands are the tools of his trade, so to speak, and the sermon, paper or article he preaches or writes is the fruits of his labors. And "By their fruits ye shall know them." Know whom? The false prophet and the true. These are things you can see, read and hear and these things you must measure out over against God's Word to see if they agree. The Berean Christians were called God's "nobleman" because they measured out everything Paul taught over against God's Word to see if His Words were "so": "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so" (Acts 17:11). If the fruit is bad the tree is bad and will be cut down (Matthew 7:18-19).

This judgment and decision God requires of each Christian for himself. In this respect the sheep indeed judge their shepherds for they have the words of the Chief Shepherd Himself to guide them. With those undershepherds who abide by these words and have the same mind, speech and judgment as the Bible we are to remain. If some undershepherds turn away from it, they are to be warned by the sheep using the words of the Shepherd and Bishop of their souls (I Peter 2:25). If the erring undershepherds do not come back to the truth they have ceased being shepherds and have become hirelings and wolves.

--- Continue In My Word

Because of a general breakdown in the teaching office of the Lutheran Church - and others - many people are unable to wield the "sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God" (Ephesians 6:17) so that they "may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and convince the gainsayers" (Titus 1:9).

The way to overcome that situation is, with the help of God, to continue to "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (II Peter 3:18). Let us, then, continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship beseeching the Lord that we all might have the same mind, speech and judgment in the divine doctrine for our Lord Jesus Christ assures us:

"If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth,

and the truth shall make you free."

(John 8:31-32)

--------------------------------------------------------------

Hark! the Church proclaims her honor,

And her strength is only this:

God hath laid His choice upon her,

And the work she doth is His.

Frail and fleeting are our powers,

Short our days, our fore-sight dim,

And we own the choice not ours,

We were chosen first by Him.

Onward, then! For naught despairing,

Calm we follow at His word,

Thus through joy and sorrow bearing

Faithful witness to our Lord.

The 26th Annual

ILC Delegate Convention

Hosted by Our Savior's Ev. Lutheran Church of Morris, IL

-1st day minutes

June 24, 2004

The convention began on time with the opening worship service, attended by 20 souls, (12 communicants), including Mrs. Dixie Finney, Mrs. Ruth Latsch, and Mrs. Julie Yeomans and 8 children. The service was conducted by Pastor Sempert who preached on Psalm 2 with the theme:

" Why the Heathen Rage "

At 10:50 following a short break for coffee and doughnuts and setting up for the meeting, delegates were introduced:

11:00 - Conference reports began:

President - Pastor Popp asked to be placed last for his report.

Secretary: The minutes of last year's conference were read to refresh everyone's memory. The secretary had no other report to present. Acceptance passed unanimously.

The Lutheran Reformation Hour: Pastor Popp says Mrs. Popp picks up the mail and writes out checks. Some folks in Arkansas have big troubles - faithful Christians who are disgusted with their church because of the contemporary changes - yet they stay !!!

Pastor Popp has over 20 file drawers full of old LRH tapes which his son is in the process of converting to CD.

The Lutheran Theological Studies Center: Faith in Christ's saving blood is the only motivation for students to study because they are offered nothing worldly for it - except rejection - which they are getting used to in our small group.

The Bible says to study to shew yourself approved and earnestly contend for the truth - to search the Scriptures and abide by the truths it teaches and they all teach Christ and Him crucified.

12:05 - Lunch break

1:15 -The President reopened the meeting commenting briefly on Romans 1:8-25 verse by verse.

1:30 - Pastor Popp gave his presidential report:

He reminds us how difficult it is for our friends to come out of erring churches. They ask "where else can I find fellowship and take communion, etc". We never know when the Lord will call us into account and it is dangerous to be in a church where there is doubt about what you believe.

We should rather hold to the Truth in our small body than be in a large body with big money to do mission work, etc.

The LCMS (in St. Louis) held meetings about reviving Walther's teachings - but they are doomed before they start because they will not come out of their erring church. They also want to build the smaller churches up or combine them into "mega churches". (Remember that it was a "mega church" in Jerusalem that killed the Lord Jesus Christ.) They think in their foolishness that bigger churches will get more people in. No- God's Word only can convert hearts.

They distribute doctrinal books throughout the world but they don't know what bible to use. -But our doctrines come from the Bible not a bible from our doctrines.

They won't leave the mega-synod because they would lose the funding - the money for the great missionary efforts.

Is not God and His Scriptures first? The apostles spread the Word of God through the whole world without a lot of money!

Never yield to give up God's Word. Hold fast that which thou hast that no man take thy crown.

2:10 - Congregational reports:

---Cross of Christ / Midland MI:

Mr. Finney reports that they have sold the church building and are holding services in the parsonage. They have 8 members including interim Pastor Sempert, (5-6 partake of Holy Communion). They meet Sunday mornings at the parsonage, once a month at Mrs. Kregal's.

---Eternal Savior / Arbor Vitae WI:

They are now meeting at the Bolger funeral Chapel in Woodruff with 17 local members in regular attendance, (8 partake of the Lord's Supper once a month) 7 children attending Sunday School, 3 members living in CA soon moving to AZ.

---Grace / of New Lenox IL:

Average attendance of 50; average communicants is 29-30; Bible class attendance of 12-13; Sunday School - 10-11; and 1 confirmation grad, 3 souls in adult instruction, and 1 sem. student. Ground breaking for the new building is scheduled for Spring '05.

---Our Savior's / Morris IL:

Average attendance of 22-23; 18-19 communicants; 2-3 Sunday School attendees; 3 confirmations; and 2 souls in adult instruction. They continue efforts to improve the building and property.

---Reformation / Tinley Park IL:

They have 11 members (9 communicants) and a few ocassional visitors. There is 1 soul in confirmation class; 1 in adult instruction; and 1 sem. student.

---St. James / Laporte MN:

(via Pastor Latsch) There are 6 souls meeting together each week and they will be relocating to Montana soon.

---Trinity / of Balwin MO:

There are 22 communicant members; an average weekly attendance of 25; 5-7 Sunday School students.

It was noted at this time that The Raidys in CA have contacted Pastor Popp desiring to start their own local congregation there. A motion was made and passed unanimously to bless and encourage them to form a local congregation.

3:15 - A motion was made that all [committee] matters be handled by the whole assembly in lieu of committees. This was passed unanimously.

3:16 - 3:45 Pastor Finke presented his paper on "Church Fellowship" followed by a recess.

At 4:30 Pastor Popp offered a few comments regarding other church bodies and their sectarianism (which idea had been brought up by Pastor Finke's paper).

4:45 - It was agreed to belay budget discussions until morning. There were no issues to discuss regarding doctrines. Regarding education: a memorial was presented to reprint the LCMS Brief Statement of 1932 with a new cover as it is in the public domain and no longer being printed by CPH.

At 5:05 we closed with the singing of Hymn 644:

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host:

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

-------------------------------------------------------------

- 2nd day minutes

June 25, 2004

9:20 - For the day's opening devotion, we read 2 Corinthians chapter 5 and sang hymn 246.

Nine men are present for the session and the Minutes from June 24 were read and passed as amended.

At 10:20 Pastor Sempert read and discussed some parts of the historical introduction to the Augsburg Confession in honor of

today being the anniversary day of it's being presented before the Emperor in 1530.

11:00 - Items for discussion directed to the whole assembly as per yesterday's decision:

--- Proposed budget was passed unanimously

A lunch break from 11:45 - 12:40 was followed by the discussion of a proposed by-law to govern the ILC Website.

--- Article 9 regulating the ILC Website contents provides for:

1) 3 site supervisors (volunteers, at least 2 shall be ILC pastors)

2) 10 minimum items of information to be included on the site

3) provision for additional material in accordance with the ILC constitution

Motion to adopt this article passed unanimously.

At 1:00 it was decided that the 2005 ILC Delegate Convention, set for June 23-24 (pastors meet the day before also) would be hosted by Reformation Lutheran Church of Tinley park, IL.

Papers for next years convention were volunteered by Pastor Latsch (on "Angels") and Pastor Popp (to continue "the Liturgy").

At 1:05 a motion was made to retain all officers as they are which motion passed unanimously. ILC Website volunteer supervisors are Dave R. Yeomans, Pastor Latsch, and Pastor Sempert.

An official "Thank-You" is extended to the Host congregation and the Ericksons for the lunch prep.

At 1:10 there was a motion made to adjourn and the conference closed with the singing of Hymn 660 "Heaven is My Home".
